Antique Convertible Chair Step Ladder Metamorphic Library Chair c.1880–1910
Antique Convertible Chair Step Ladder Metamorphic Library Chair c.1880–1910
Antique convertible chair–step ladder dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Often referred to as a library chair or metamorphic chair, this style was commonly used in homes, libraries, and shops to access higher shelving while serving as a standard chair when not in use.
The chair converts into a step ladder through its original hinged and folding wood construction. Made entirely from solid wood with traditional joinery, reflecting practical furniture design from the Victorian to Edwardian period.
The piece shows significant age-related wear, surface marks, and patina consistent with long-term use. Structurally solid for display. Due to age and original construction, this piece is not recommended for use as a functional ladder and is being sold as a decorative or display item only.
Dimensions:
Chair form (seat): 17" high x 15" wide x 14" deep
Ladder form height: approx. 34"
